Libs Elliot – Guest Quilter coming to Thunder Bay April 18 & 19, 2020 for 2 Workshops and a Trunk Show.
Embrace the Chaos – An Exercise in Controlled Randomness – full day workshop – FULL*
Saturday April 18th, 2020 @ 10 am, Oliver Road Community Centre, Lower Level
Using only paper and pencils – no computers required! – I will walk students through a series of worksheet exercises that mimic the programming language I use to generate my quilt patterns. By using controlled elements in a random way, each participant will end up with a unique quilt pattern layout – no two Chaos Quilts are the same!
As a group, we’ll discuss design flow and tweak our individual layouts. Then we’ll cut fabrics and work on piecing our designs, using provided block-building instructions. At the end of the class, each participant will leave with her/his own random geometric quilt design and will have the knowledge required to complete the project at home.
1 Full-Day Session allows time for drafting, design and initial block construction. Level: All Levels
Improv Piecing with Dynamic Stripes – full day workshop- FULL*
Sunday April 19th, 2020
In this workshop, we will explore visually dynamic striped piecing and create one-of-a-kind striped compositions. We’ll review examples of how color, size and angles can affect visual outcome. We will cover strip-piecing and how to cut equilateral and half-square triangles. Libs will share tips on ironing, pinning and how to line up seams. Participants will be able to make choices on what kind of stripes they want to make and how they want to cut their block pieces so, in the end, no two compositions are alike. During the course of the class, we’ll share our progress for group input. By the end of the session, participants will have the knowledge and motivation to complete the project at home (if not completed in class). Level: All Levels.
All workshops are $75 for members or $90 for non members. Payment is due within one week of registration. Options for payment are cash, cheque (made payable to Thunder Bay Quilt Guild) or e-transfer to firstname.lastname@example.org.
As a bonus each workshop participant will also receive 1 trunk show ticket. Please keep in mind that trunk show tickets are per participant not per workshop taken ie. Sally takes both workshops, Sally receives 1 Trunk Show ticket.
- BOTH CLASSES ARE FULL – to put your name on the waiting lists email email@example.com. Tickets still available for the Trunk Show – at the next meeting.
We make a commitment to you by offering our workshops and you make a commitment to us when you register for one. If you must cancel your registration, please let us know immediately so that we can attempt to fill your spot. Registration fees are not refundable unless the Guild is able to find someone from the wait list who can take the spot. If there is no wait list, registrants are encouraged to find a replacement for their spot.
No Shows are not entitled to a refund.
Very rarely, the workshop will need to be cancelled by the teacher or the Guild. In such cases, all registrants will receive a full refund of fees paid.

Libs Elliott is known for using computer code and algorithms to create her random quilt patterns. Libs will discuss her ongoing exploration of how technology can transform a traditional craft into modern, functional art. She will show examples of her work and give attendees a peek into her process. Libs will talk about her inspirations, her quilt story so far, and how we can all work to keep the craft of quilting relevant to the next generation.
